It is a combination of two native Vietnamese words: "trên" (originated from Proto-Vietic *tər-linʔ, meaning "above") and "có" (originated from Proto-Vietic *ʔklaːʔ, meaning "to have"). It developed as a common colloquial phrase in modern Vietnamese.
