không phải là

/kʰəwŋ fǎj lǎː/

VI

is not; is not the case

Đây không phải là sách của tôi.

This is not my book.

Etymology

This is a standard Vietnamese negative phrase. "không" means "no/not", "phải" means "must/be right", and "là" means "to be". Combined directly to form the common negative copula phrase.

Memory Aid

Break it into parts: "không" sounds like 'khong' which rhymes with 'wrong' (think wrong = not right), "phải" sounds like 'fight' (you fight to say what is right), "là" sounds like 'lah' like saying 'that is' — so put together: 'wrong fight that is' = not that thing.
