hyperfocus

/ˈhaɪ.pərˌfoʊ.kəs/

EN

An intense state of concentrated attention on a specific task, activity, or topic, often to the exclusion of other surrounding stimuli, frequently associated with neurodivergent conditions such as ADHD.

Many people with ADHD can fall into hyperfocus while working on a hobby they enjoy, losing track of time completely.

Etymology

Coined in the early 20th century from the prefix hyper-, meaning 'over or excessive', combined with the word focus from Latin focus meaning 'hearth, center'. It entered common psychological usage in the 1990s.
