gaslighting

/ˈɡæslaɪtɪŋ/

EN

A form of psychological manipulation where a person makes someone question their own memory, perception, or sanity by sowing doubt and distorting facts.

Many victims of domestic abuse do not even realize they are experiencing gaslighting at the hands of their partner.

Etymology

The term originates from the 1938 play *Gas Light* and its subsequent film adaptations, where a husband manipulates his wife by dimming their gas-powered lights and denies the lights are changing, to convince her she is hallucinating. It entered widespread psychological usage in the 1980s.
