sigma
/ˈsɪɡmə/
EN
The 18th letter of the Greek alphabet, written as Σ (uppercase) or σ (lowercase in word-medial position) or ς (lowercase word-finally), used in mathematics, science, and engineering to represent sums, standard deviation, cross-sections, and other quantities
In statistics, the lowercase sigma σ is commonly used to denote the population standard deviation of a data set.
Etymology
The word derives from the Greek letter σίγμα (sígma), the name of the Greek S sound, which itself comes from the Phoenician letter šin, the ancestor of many Western alphabet letters including our letter S.
