mortgage
/ˈmɔːrɡɪdʒ/
EN
A legal agreement by which a bank or similar institution lends money to buy property, and the property acts as collateral for the loan; also refers to the loan itself.
Many first-time home buyers take out a 30-year mortgage to afford their house.
Etymology
The word comes from Old French 'mort' (dead) and 'gage' (pledge), meaning a 'dead pledge'. The term originally referred to the agreement becoming void if the borrower repaid the debt as agreed.
