esmorzar
/əs.muɾˈzaɾ/
CA
The Catalan word for breakfast, the first meal of the day. Can also refer to the act of eating breakfast.
Avui he menjat pa amb tomàquet per esmorzar.
Today I ate bread with tomato for breakfast.
Etymology
Derived from Latin "exmorsum", past participle of "exmordēre" (to bite off), combining the prefix "ex-" (out) and "mordēre" (to bite). It entered Catalan around the 13th century.
Memory Aid
Think: "Eating a morsel first thing is esmorzar." "Morsel" sounds similar to the start of "esmorzar" and connects to eating food in the morning.
