EN

(of a person, especially a young woman) reserved, modest, and shy in manner or appearance, often in a way that is considered attractive

Etymology

Demure comes from the 14th-century Old French word 'demeuré', the past participle of 'demeurer' meaning 'to reside, to behave', originally deriving from Latin 'de' + 'manere' meaning 'to stay'. It took on its current sense of modest reserve by the 16th century.
