Việc trưng thu
VI
The act of a government or authority seizing or requisitioning private property for public use, usually with compensation
Chính phủ đã tiến hành việc trưng thu khu đất này để xây dựng đường cao tốc mới.
The government carried out the requisition of this piece of land to build a new highway.
Etymology
"Trưng thu" comes from the Sino-Vietnamese words "trưng" (collect, gather) and "thu" (take back, collect), entering common Vietnamese usage during the development of modern Vietnamese administrative vocabulary. "Việc" means "act" or "process", so the phrase literally means "the act of collecting/seizing".
Memory Aid
Break the phrase into parts: "việc" = act, "trưng" = gather, "thu" = take — remember it as the official act of taking property for public use.
