Pythagorean theorem

/paɪˌθæɡəˈriːən ˈθiːərəm/

EN

A fundamental geometric principle stating that in a right-angled triangle, the square of the length of the hypotenuse (the side opposite the right angle) equals the sum of the squares of the lengths of the other two sides.

Middle school students learn to use the Pythagorean theorem to calculate unknown side lengths of right triangles.

Etymology

Named after the ancient Greek philosopher and mathematician Pythagoras of Samos, who is traditionally credited with proving the relationship, though the relationship was known to earlier Babylonian and Indian mathematicians.
