A colloquial, often controversial slang term derived from 'nigger', most commonly used informally as a friendly or familiar term of address among Black people, but widely considered offensive when used by non-Black people due to its roots in anti-Black racial oppression.
Many rappers use the term in lyrics, but social norms strongly discourage its use by anyone who is not Black.
Etymology
Derived from the 18th century slur 'nigger', which itself comes from Spanish/Portuguese 'negro' meaning 'black', the variant 'nigga' emerged in 20th century African-American Vernacular English as a reclaimed, informal spelling and pronunciation.
