Etymology
This term was first introduced by the World Economic Forum in 2018, to label outstanding smart factories that guide the future direction of global manufacturing transformation, just as a lighthouse guides ships at sea.
Memory Aid
Think of a lighthouse: it stands out at sea and provides guidance for ships. A lighthouse factory stands out in global manufacturing and provides guidance for industrial digital transformation, which matches its meaning perfectly.
