Schizophrenia can cause a person to experience hallucinations where they hear voices that no one else can hear.

Etymology

The word entered English in the 16th century, borrowed from the Latin hallucinātiō, meaning a wandering of the mind or delusion, which comes from the verb hallucinārī, to wander in thought or be delirious.
